RED CROSS "SOUND THE ALARM"

BBDO NEW YORK

When I was seven, I was terrified of fire. I lived outside of Santa Fe, and for about a year I was so scared I had to memorize our fire code (how to locate our house as we didn’t even have a street number). I made sure every babysitter knew this code, along with the number for our fire station, and still, despite this precaution, it overwhelmed me.

The fear spread, into many irrational places, and did not fully let go until years later. In truth, our home outside of Santa Fe was probably pretty safe. But fire can break out anywhere, and whats worse, is millions of homes do not have smoke detectors. In fact every day 7 people die in a home fire. So I was grateful for the opportunity to participate in Red Cross’s ‘Sound The Alarm’ Homefire campaign, a drive to install over one million smoke detectors.

For this film, we crafted a narrative about a young girl, hearing many scary sounds, and yet, the scariest sound is the one she didn't. Many people donated their time and craft to this piece, including the wonderful young actress, Vivien Lyrea Blair (from Birdbox), who was one of the most professional talents I have ever worked with. Autumn Durald (DP) made sure we were able to shoot this on 35mm film, and Jamm brought the fire!
